Join the English Department in welcoming Kateřina Kolářová, Professor in the Department of Gender Studies from Charles University in Prague. Her book project, tentatively titled Postsocialist Rehabilitations: Disability, Race, Sexuality and the Limits of National Belonging in the Czech Republic offers to view the postsocialist transformation in the Czech republic as a project of national belonging and abandonment that depended upon assemblages and dense interweavings of disability, race and sexuality. In this talk, she will trace how the project of what Julie Passanante Elman terms ‘rehabilitative citizenship’ is achieved through locating failure, and explore how forms of national belonging are predicated upon conditions of abandonment. How is this tension between belonging and abandonment negotiated and justified?
